While no two races unfold identically, don't expect green-flag pit cycles at Martinsville; there hasn't been one in over five years. In the instance one does occur, anticipate top position-protecting crew chiefs like Cole Pearn (64.29 percent position retention when pitting from a top-five spot), Alan Gustafson (61.11 percent) and Adam Stevens (53.33 percent) to supply some stingy defense on behalf of their drivers.

There were 11 legitimate accidents this spring at Martinsville. Based on the track's recent history, that wasn't a novelty. In seven of the track's last nine races, more than 17 percent of the laps were completed under caution. The sheer number of expected crashes should turn Martinsville into a dash race, yielding the best results to drivers with a high-efficiency restarting ability and cars with feisty short-run speed.

Dating back to 2005, Martinsville rewarded its fastest car with a victory 36 percent of the time. That frequency is shy of the 40 percent norm across all facilities. The same data also reveals a litany of consecutive strong showings; the fastest car in one Martinsville race repeated the feat in the very next race at the track five times across a 12-year stretch.

Eventual race winner Brad Keselowski possessed the fastest car during the spring contest at Martinsville, but across five short track races this season, Martin Truex Jr.'s No. 78 Toyota ranks as the fastest, per timing and scoring data. In fact, Furniture Row Racing as an organization has showcased stellar short track speed, as its second car, driven by Erik Jones, ranks as the second fastest.

Pearn, a three-time national kart racing champion in Canada, competed in late models.[2] In 2001, Pearn debuted in the CASCAR Super Series at Delaware Speedway, finishing 17th.[3] Pearn competed full-time in 2002 and 2003, driving the No. 24 Pontiac and recording a best finish of sixth twice: in 2002 at Delaware[4] and 2003 at Race City Speedway.[5]

After graduating from college, Pearn worked for Toyota, and later moved to North Carolina. He joined Richard Childress Racing in 2007, working with Kevin Harvick's No. 29 crew as an engineer.[6] In 2010, he joined Furniture Row Racing as a team engineer, though he left for JTG Daugherty Racing in 2011.[7] Pearn returned to FRR during the 2012 season, becoming the team's lead race engineer. On December 3, 2014, Pearn was promoted to crew chief of the No. 78, replacing Todd Berrier,[2] who had departed the team to join Joe Gibbs Racing,[6] and Pearn became the first regular Canadian crew chief in Cup Series history.[8] In 2015, Pearn and driver Martin Truex Jr. won the Axalta "We Paint Winners" 400 at Pocono Raceway, and Pearn became the first Canadian crew chief to win a Cup race.[9] In 2016, Pearn was suspended for the Kobalt 400 after failing technical inspection at the Folds of Honor QuikTrip 500; the team had also been penalized at the Daytona 500 the week before for roof flap problems.[10] During the 2017 season, Pearn and Truex won eight races en route to the series championship.
